About Me

Food is one of my many joys in life. It is a common bond I share among my friends and family. Combining food and travel makes it all the more interesting. I enjoy going out for a good meal with friends and family. The array of various cuisines and our fantastic array of produce really makes Sydney such a great city to live in. Blogging is my hobby and my posts on restaurant meals I have had are paid for and not gratis. Any gratis provided to me will always be stated beforehand.

Burch & Purchese Sweet Studio

Another tick on my 'to do' list while in Melbourne! I finally get to visit Burch & Purchese Sweet Studio. Walking into the store, I felt like I was in Dessert Wonderland. The staff were so friendly, attentive and happy to wait for the people milling around to make a decision on their selection.

There were trays of new cakes and chocolate creations to sample, what a great idea!! Not ready to be on sale but definitely a very attractive offering to the public who walk in and are surrounded by glorious, beautiful and utterly visually appealing desserts.

There is so much to take in when I walked into the patisserie. It took me a while to have a real good look at everything on display and the staff were so gracious and said I could take as many photos as I wanted. How nice, and I did appreciate it.

There were novelty cakes especially for Halloween, beautiful cake pops, chocolates and more chocolates but of course, there were all those beautiful and very interesting cakes, made up of a variety of flavours thought up by renowned patissier Darren Purchese. He is very creative and seriously quite brilliant!

Loved it, loved it, loved it! I wish I would have eaten every cake on offering, but alas one can only have so much in one session.

I liked the fact that the kitchen was open enough for the visitors to see all the kitchen team hard at work.

I was fortunate enough to meet Darren Purchese, who was very warm and friendly. He even brought Kylie Millar out of the kitchen as I was quite keen to meet her too. I was stoked to meet them both. It is not often that I get to meet celebrities, especially ones who are extremely talented with desserts! So I am truly privileged!! Thank you to both of them for taking the time to say hello to little old me!

My verdict of the single cake I bought is "Yum"! Delicious, creamy mousse with very interesting flavours of Chocolate, Mandarin and Salted Caramel which included marmalade, aerated chocolate shortbread and chocolate mirror glaze. It was so sinful, but who could resist it?!?!?

My friend BJ who was with me, and who is so not into sweets I might add, left the store with a handful of small cakes and a Raspberry paddle pop in her hand. Isn't that a testament to how persuasive Darren Purchese's creations are?

So I say this to Melbournians, to other interstate visitors, and to any overseas visitors; you must check this place out when you are in Melbourne. It should by default be included in your 'To Visit and Delight In' list.

I end this post with a visual delight of the freshly made Coconut, Passionfruit, Ginger and Mint cake. Looks good enough to eat, no?

P/S
A day after my visit to Burch & Purchese, I met a young lady who was serving me at the cash register of a kitchenware store in the city (Melbourne). As she was slowly wrapping my purchases, she found out I was from Sydney and started to rave about the Sydney renowned patissier Adriano Zumbo.

She also mentioned that she was a qualified cook and that she really wanted to get into becoming a patissier. I was happy to hear her talk so well of Mr Zumbo but I thought it strange she didn't mention anything about the Melbourne patisseries. So I asked her if she had been to Burch & Purchese which is located in South Yarra. She had no idea what I was talking about so I started raving about how good this patisserie is and showed her some of my photos on my iPhone.

Well, I think my visual images convinced her and she promised to check out Burch & Purchese real soon.  Her name was Adriana and I hope she does check you out!
